Chapter 10, Page 21
Summary
In Veidt’s darkened office, Rorschach and Dan discover financial records linking Adrian Veidt to Pyramid Deliveries and the larger conspiracy. Suspicion becomes a destination: they identify Veidt’s Antarctic retreat, Karnak, gather evidence, and prepare to confront him.
Panels
The page begins with three narrow panels that rapidly move from data to Dan’s reaction to Rorschach’s deduction, then opens into two full-width panels. That expansion transforms investigation into decision: the middle panel gives their plan spatial weight, while the final long shot slows the pace and makes the two men small against Veidt’s monumental architecture. The page turn then carries their “long journey” into Rorschach’s journal account of departure.
Environment
The Egyptian décor is no longer merely Veidt’s cultivated corporate style; the computer’s reference to Ramesses II turns it into evidence. A visible Ozymandias famine-relief advertisement sharpens the irony: Veidt’s public image promises humanitarian rescue while his private business network points toward concealed violence.
Color
Cool violet, gray, and sickly monitor-green dominate the office, giving discovery the sterile atmosphere of surveillance and corporate machinery. The final panel abruptly floods the room with yellow light, silhouetting the detectives; illumination arrives literally as they understand the conspiracy, yet the severe black figures prevent that revelation from feeling reassuring.
Symbols
Pyramids and Egyptian names converge around Adrian, converting his Ozymandias persona from branding into a trail he has arrogantly left behind. Dan’s owl mask, enlarged in panel 2, makes his shocked eyes almost mechanical: the page emphasizes seeing and recognition while reminding us that truth is being processed through constructed identities.
Themes
The crucial irony is that the world’s reputedly smartest man is exposed through the vanity of his own self-mythology: “Ramesses II” unlocks Ozymandias. Yet knowledge does not equal power; even after identifying Veidt, Rorschach and Dan stand physically diminished inside his headquarters and must pursue him into territory he controls, turning detection into a confrontation with concentrated private authority.
Graphic Novel Technique
The computer screen functions as an embedded document, allowing the reader to inspect the same evidence as the characters without an explanatory narrator. Gibbons then uses scale like cinematic cutting—screen, close-up, medium interaction, architectural long shot—but the fixed page preserves all stages of realization at once, letting the reader glance backward and reconstruct the deduction. This is a particularly sophisticated use of investigative sequencing within the superhero form.
