Chapter 7, Page 22
Summary
Dan and Laurie take Archie, the Owlship, out of its hidden subway berth and cautiously test its long-neglected controls. Their tentative return to costumed life becomes decisive when Dan blasts through a warehouse roof and launches into the night, shifting the scene from awkward preparation to exhilarated action.
Panels
Six equal panels occupy the upper two-thirds before a wide final panel replaces the bottom row, moving from procedural close views to spectacle. The repeated three-column rhythm makes Dan’s checklist feel cautious and mechanical; the expanded low-angle finale then releases that stored energy as Archie erupts through the roof. The previous page ends with “Let’s go,” while this page-turn immediately converts resolve into motion.
Environment
The forgotten subway spur and derelict warehouse make superheroism seem less like public service than a buried, illicit history. Rusted doors, debris, and boarded industrial architecture place Dan’s gleaming technology inside urban decay; his expensive private machine can escape the ruins below, while the following page reveals residents trapped in a burning tenement nearby.
Color
Muted blue-greens, violets, and grays dominate the cockpit and abandoned infrastructure, making the underground journey feel cold and dormant. Warm orange light gathers around the tunnel and Owlship, then bursts into pale smoke against a black sky in the final panel; color therefore tracks the craft’s movement from concealment toward renewed visibility without making that renewal entirely comforting.
Symbols
Archie’s paired windows repeatedly resemble enormous owl eyes, turning Dan’s former identity into architecture and machinery. Its passage from underground darkness, through closed doors, and finally through the roof suggests a visual rebirth: Nite Owl has been entombed in nostalgia, and now violently re-emerges, though his soot-obscured goggles comically show that the recovered mask remains imperfect.
Themes
The page treats heroism as both responsibility and recovered pleasure. Dan speaks in the language of tests, switches, and safety, yet his delight in remembered reflexes reveals how deeply the Nite Owl role satisfies him. The irony becomes sharper on the following page: this nostalgic flight almost immediately confronts genuine suffering, turning private reenactment into an ethical demand for action.
Graphic Novel Technique
The page makes acceleration spatial: readers move through six tightly bounded units of dialogue and incremental motion before encountering the broad, nearly wordless release of the final image. Its gutters compress a sequence of switches, doors, and locations into a smooth launch montage, while the enlarged last panel supplies a cinematic establishing shot whose duration remains under the reader’s control—a sophisticated modulation of the nine-panel grid.
