Chapter 7, Page 09

Summary

In the underground Owlship hangar, Dan shows Laurie his old Nite Owl goggles and other equipment. Her teasing curiosity becomes genuine delight when the night-vision lenses transform the darkened room into a scene “clear as day,” briefly restoring the gadgets—and Dan’s heroic past—to living usefulness.

Panels

Gibbons uses an exact nine-panel grid, moving from conversational medium shots to increasingly intimate views of hands, goggles, and faces. Panel 7 plunges the hangar into near-black silhouettes; panel 8 explains the mechanism; panel 9 supplies the visual payoff through the lenses. The following page continues this exchange of viewpoints, extending the flirtation and delaying the return to ordinary sight.

Environment

The hangar is less a headquarters than a private museum: obsolete masks, consoles, smoke bombs, and other carefully preserved devices surround Dan and Laurie. Against their remarks about Rorschach’s deterioration, this orderly archive reveals another response to retirement—Dan has domesticated vigilantism into collecting, tinkering, and nostalgia.

Color

Warm peach, pink, and yellow make the upper panels feel playfully nostalgic, while panel 7 abruptly removes almost all color and detail. The pink binocular image in panel 9 then converts darkness into technological visibility: Higgins makes Laurie’s excitement perceptible as a palette change, not merely something reported in dialogue.

Symbols

Goggles, lenses, and eyes dominate the page, making vision inseparable from masked identity. Laurie first treats the device as campy costume jewelry, then literally sees through it; the circular lenses in panel 9 recall both owl eyes and camera apertures, suggesting that superhero equipment offers enhanced perception while also narrowing experience into a designed field of view.

Themes

The page treats nostalgia as both embarrassing and seductive. Dan apologizes for the “kitschy” remains of his former life, yet Laurie’s pleasure validates the ingenuity behind them; beside the discussion of Rorschach, the scene contrasts two afterlives of heroism—obsessive continuation and self-conscious retreat. It also advances their intimacy through shared play rather than direct confession.

Graphic Novel Technique

The crucial transformation occurs across gutters: illuminated conversation, blackout, instruction, then subjective vision. Because all nine moments remain visible at once, the reader can compare ordinary sight, darkness, and mediated sight without losing the page’s steady rhythm. This controlled alternation between objective framing and gadget-filtered perception is a particularly sophisticated use of superhero apparatus as both plot device and formal device.
