Chapter 5, Page 22

Summary

Detective Steven Fine and his partner continue discussing the Blake murder in a cluttered police office, wondering whether Adrian Veidt fits a larger pattern. An anonymous caller offers Fine a cryptic lead—“raw shark”—and the detectives abruptly leave to pursue it, shifting the scene from weary speculation to urgent action.

Panels

The strict nine-panel grid converts conversation into procedure: broad office views alternate with tighter framings of Fine, the file, and the telephone. Panels 4–8 progressively concentrate attention around the call, while the final panel releases that pressure as the detectives move out of frame; the following page then answers this verbal urgency with largely silent, ominously paced movement elsewhere.

Environment

The overfilled office—lockers, paper cups, case folders, overflowing bins—places the investigation within an ordinary, imperfect institution rather than a glamorous detective world. Veidt enters this drab setting through paperwork and photographs: one of the novel’s celebrated public heroes has become an object of bureaucratic suspicion.

Color

Acidic yellows dominate the office lighting, set against Fine’s saturated green sweater and the black-and-pink geometry of the windows. The palette makes the supposedly rational workplace feel uneasy and artificial, while the bright telephone remains conspicuous enough to become the visual hinge on which the page turns.

Symbols

The telephone is the page’s controlling motif: first an ignored object, then a source of radiating sound, and finally the instrument that redirects the investigation. The phrase “raw shark” also echoes the preceding page’s pirate imagery and shark discussion, briefly making unrelated strands of the novel seem to bleed into one another without confirming any literal connection.

Themes

Fine’s joking dismissal of modern “messiahs” sits uneasily beside his suspicion of Veidt, whose cultivated image as an enlightened benefactor may conceal private motives. The anonymous tip further stresses institutional vulnerability: official knowledge advances not through mastery but through incomplete files, accidental connections, and information supplied by an unseen person whose reliability cannot yet be judged.

Graphic Novel Technique

Moore and Gibbons make sound visible without abandoning the still page: the ringing phone acquires graphic force through radiating lines, repeated placement, and dialogue that keeps postponing Fine’s response. Because all nine moments remain simultaneously available, the reader can see the ignored phone in earlier panels while reading its eventual consequence—a sophisticated use of recurrence and spatial memory within the grid.
