Summary
On a silent nighttime street, Rorschach finds the Comedian’s bloodstained smiley-face badge near a drain, studies the apartment building above him, assembles a grappling device, and ascends toward the crime scene. The page transforms him from a rumor discussed by detectives on the previous page into an active, methodical investigator operating outside official channels.
Panels
Gibbons uses the full nine-panel grid as a sequence of preparation and ascent. The first six panels alternate low and high angles, repeatedly measuring Rorschach against pavement and architecture; the final row then traces the grappling line from launch to arc to vertical climb. The page turn pays this movement off on the following page, where Rorschach bursts through the window in a large image that breaks the previous page’s measured rhythm.
Environment
The empty pavement, looming apartment façades, rooftop water tank, fire escape, and illuminated windows turn New York into a canyon of vertical surfaces. Human activity has largely withdrawn indoors; what remains is infrastructure, scattered litter, and a partially legible advertisement, creating an urban environment that is both inhabited and eerily indifferent to the violence that occurred there.
Color
Black dominates the page, swallowing faces, sky, and architectural depth, while pale yellow circles—the moon, lit windows, and the badge—guide the eye through the darkness. Against muted browns and violets, the grappling line’s bright yellow becomes a graphic trajectory across the final row, converting motion itself into the page’s strongest compositional element.
Symbols
The smiley badge is the page’s visual hinge: first tiny beside the drain, then held close in Rorschach’s blue-gloved hand. Its cheerful face, stained by the murder, condenses Watchmen’s characteristic collision of innocence and violence; Rorschach’s own shifting inkblot mask answers it with another unstable face, linking investigation to the larger problem of how appearances conceal moral disorder.
Themes
The page contrasts institutional investigation with vigilante compulsion. The detectives on the previous page dismiss masked interference while wondering uneasily about Rorschach; here, without dialogue or authorization, he discovers evidence and gains access to the sealed crime scene. His competence is undeniable, but the nocturnal secrecy and invasive entry keep that competence morally unsettled rather than presenting it as uncomplicated heroism.
Graphic Novel Technique
Because the page contains no words, the reader must infer intention from framing, repetition, and the spaces between images: badge, upward gaze, device, fired line, ascent. Comics lets the final three moments remain visible together as a diagram of motion across the page, while the regular grid makes each action feel deliberate. This disciplined visual narration was unusually austere for mainstream superhero comics of the period.
